It is not the “Model Minority Myth”, it is the Model Citizen Reality! This is what happens when the "Asian American" students in colleges are lumped in with the other minorities and put under the umbrella of "Diversity and Inclusion" or when they hang out with those who suffer from the voluntary form of mental retardation commonly known as "white guilt". Thank goodness the international college students from Asian nations don't get caught up in this nonsense. Stereotypes exist for a reason. Some are good. Some are bad. But people didn’t just make them up. Certain things happened often enough for basic pattern recognition skills to kick in. If you are on the receiving end of negative stereotypes…you know what they are – DON’T DO THAT CRAP! If you are on the receiving end of positive stereotypes…what are you complaining about? If someone wants to think that “inherently smart, upstanding, law-abiding musical prodigies who are good at math and win spelling bees” describes you, why in the world would you correct them or give them a reason to think otherwise? If given a choice between that and having people look at you and think, “possible armed robber, drug dealer or rapist”, the choice seems pretty clear. If you are thinking about fighting against this “myth”, go see your parents so they can slap you in the face and ask what’s wrong with you. Do you think your parents and grandparents came to the USA _ legally _ and worked hard and struggled and sacrificed so that you could fight to be thought of as being just a crappy as everyone else? Don’t “check your privilege”; be happy to have it and understand that anyone else is perfectly capable of having it too if they work for it and conduct themselves with some dignity and self-respect.
