So…American likes pipelines now?
The White House and Berlin have reached an agreement that effectively ends Western opposition to the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The pipeline – which is nearly complete – would create another route for Russian gas to pass into Europe. But the project has been dogged by political opposition from Washington.
Reports suggest that the deal requires Germany to make promising investments into Ukraine’s green energy sector, among other things.
Russian President Vladimir Putin received a phone call from German Chancellor Angela Merkel about the deal, and he was said to be ‘satisfied’. Officials from US President Joe Biden’s office have also confirmed the existence of the agreement.
