They weren’t “Traitors”, they were fighting for _their_ country by defending themselves against the USA.
Also, the USA military literally fought FOR slavery right up until December 6, 1965 when the 13th Amendment was ratified.
To this day, the USA has not nor does not fight against slavery either!
Slavery has continued to exist in other parts of the world since than and yet Congress has never declared war on any other country because they engaged in their sovereign prerogative to engage in slavery nor have we deployed troops to any such nation-state with the goal of liberating the slaves there or regime change to put in place a government that would abolish slavery in said nation-state.
